The 11-Step Hair Routine for Hair Growth – Do You Need It?

BY JAY SMALL, TRICHOLOGIST, HAIRSTYLIST AND CO-FOUNDER OF AREY

The 11-step haircare routine popularized by Abbey Yung quickly became a viral sensation. This maximalist approach of layering serums, masks, scalp exfoliants, and leave-in treatments sends a clear message: more steps equal better hair growth. But do you really need an 11-step routine to grow long, healthy hair?

Bottom line, the real foundation for healthy hair growth has very little to do with how many products you use, and everything to do with the products you are going to use consistently that support your hair follicles.

What is The 11-Step Hair Routine?

The 11-step hair routine, popularly known as the "Abbey Yung Method," is a comprehensive hair care system that is designed to repair damage, maximize hair growth, and improve texture through consistent, high-maintenance care.

Here’s an overview of Abbey Yung’s 11-step routine:

    • Pre-shampoo treatments, including oils, serums and bond-repairers.

    • Deep cleansing, featuring clarifying shampoos and scalp exfoliants.

    • Nourishing conditioners, deeply hydrating and moisture-sealing treatments.

    • Heat protectants, to prevent future damage from heat-styling.

Abbey’s system leans heavily on pre-shampoo treatments, multiple repair steps, and non-negotiable heat protection to prevent future breakage. The Arey haircare system goes one step further – it also delivers the nutrients your hair needs to grow longer, thicker, and healthier.

From a clinical perspective, Abbey’s 11-step hair routine is what Trichologists call a high-resilience routine. She’s built a system that creates a "structural buffer" that allows her hair to withstand external stressors, like heat styling, without compromising its integrity. It is the difference between having hair that is "lucky" and hair that is strategically protected.

It’s important to say there is nothing inherently wrong with an elaborate hair routine. If an 11-step haircare ritual helps you feel confident, relaxed, and results in hair that looks and feels its best, it absolutely has value. Consistency, after all, is the best way to see visible results in beauty and haircare.

What is most important is to remember that most multi-step routines focus on the hair strand – not the follicles where hair growth actually begins.

The Best Nutrients for Healthy Hair Growth

You may not agree, but your body considers your hair as non-essential. This means that when your body experiences stress from sudden weight loss or nutrient deficiencies, it prioritizes more vital organs – like your heart and lungs. If your goal is longer, healthier hair, you need to be sure you’re getting the best nutrients for hair growth.

Read more here about the effects of sudden weight loss on your hair from GLP-1 medications.

In my Trichology practice, one of the first questions I ask my clients is about their diet, because their hair health is often the first place where nutritional imbalances show up.

Signs of inadequate nutrition can show up in your hair as:

    • Thinning
    • Slower growth
    • Increased shedding
    • Loss of pigment (greying)
    • Weak, brittle strands

It can be frustrating, but great hair isn’t achieved just by what you put on your hair; it’s also what you are putting in your body. Strong, resilient hair starts with nourished hair roots (follicles) in a healthy scalp environment.

Great hair is a balance of protecting the existing hair you have and improving the new hair you are growing. The best hair routine should address both those needs. The good news is that it doesn’t have to take hours out of your day or be complicated.

The Arey Method: 4 Haircare Steps That Actually Matter

As a hair health professional, I believe consistency is the best way to see results, so I always suggest choosing a hair routine you can realistically maintain.

A clinically effective hair routine can be as simple as four core steps:

Step 1. Cleanse and Condition

Cleansing and conditioning is how you maintain the health and appearance of the hair you already have. Wash and Smooth are a gentle, balanced shampoo and conditioner duo that improve your hair’s softness, shine, and manageability. Wash shampoo also contains Arey’s patented Mela-9® Complex to also support your hair thickness and growth.

Step 2. Protect Your Existing Hair

Your existing hair can be easily stressed by heat styling, chemical treatments, and sun exposure. All of these can cause split ends and dry, brittle hair. The best way to protect your existing hair is to always use a heat protectant before heat styling, and don’t skip the sun (UV) protection for your hair.

Step 3. Take Care of Your Scalp

Healthy hair begins in a healthy scalp environment. You can help nourish your new hair growth round the clock with targeted, antioxidant-rich serums To The Root® and Good Night, Grey™

How To The Root® and Good Night, Grey™ deliver 24-hour scalp care:

    • Reduce oxidative stress that can damage your hair on a cellular level.

    • Block the DHT hormone that can cause increased hair shedding.

    • Support pigment production for fewer grey hairs and more vibrant hair color over time.

To The Root® and Good Night, Grey™ are lightweight serums clinically-proven to deliver bio-active ingredients directly to your hair roots, supporting both growth and pigment production at the source.

Step 4. Nourish New Hair Growth

A hair routine that combines surface-level hair care with a nutritional supplement delivers an “inside out, outside in” approach to hair growth, and is far more effective when it comes to hair growth. Without targeted nutrition, your hair’s growth cycle slows, and your hair quality declines.

Arey’s Not Today, Grey supplement is designed to deliver targeted micronutrients that support both the growth phase (anagen) and pigment production. The result – healthier hair and fewer greys.
