Can You Fix Split Ends? These Are The Best Hair Damage Hacks

BY JAY SMALL, TRICHOLOGIST, HAIRSTYLIST AND CO-FOUNDER OF AREY

Ever find yourself frowning at those frayed ends on otherwise healthy hair strands? Split ends can look forked or feathered, and they can make even the best cared-for hair look dry and unhealthy. Unfortunately, even the best hair damage hacks can’t truly fix split ends. But there is a lot you can do to disguise and reduce them.

Smart haircare starts with giving your hair what it needs to prevent and disguise split ends. Here’s everything you need to know:

What Causes Split Ends?

Split ends (also called trichoptilosis) occur when the protective outer layer of your hair shaft – the cuticle – becomes damaged. This causes the inner fibers of each hair strand to lift and separate, creating that familiar forked or feathered look.

Here are some of the main causes of split ends, and what to do:

    • Weak, vulnerable hair (improve hair health via nutrition)

    • Heat styling (keep temperatures low and use heat protectant)

    • Chemical treatments (reduce frequency)

    • Over-brushing (no, 100 strokes isn’t good for your hair)

    • Sun exposure (get a hat or use UV protection for your hair)

    • Friction (avoid rough towels and cotton pillowcases)

    • Lack of moisture (leave-in conditioners are your new best friend)

    • Natural aging of the hair strand (treat aging hair gently)

All these factors can damage your hair strands where they are most vulnerable – the ends. That’s because the ends are the oldest part of your hair. If your hair is 12 inches long, those ends are likely 2–3 years old.

Why You Can’t “Repair” Split Ends

Here’s the honest science. Once a hair strand splits, the fibers have physically separated, and your hair is now structurally damaged. No product  – whatever claims it makes – can permanently fuse split ends back together.

Here’s what many hair products are doing when they claim to “repair” split ends:

    • Coat the hair shaft – this can have a temporary effect, but it can also weigh your hair down and make it feel heavy.

    • Smooth rough cuticles – some products use heavy silicones to coat each strand. These can build up on your head and cause brittle and dry strands.

    • Temporarily binds split fibers together – a temporary effect that doesn’t improve your hair’s health and resilience over time.

    • Add shine to disguise fraying – who doesn’t want shine? But it won’t fix your frayed ends.

Unfortunately, the only permanent solution for split ends is trimming them off. Regular haircuts are key to your overall hair health, especially if you have long hair or you regularly use hair color or heat-styling tools.

The good news is that there’s a lot you can do to have healthier hair and fewer split ends. When I have a client who is concerned about hair damage and split ends, I always go back to basics - what are they eating (the inside out approach to haircare), and what are they putting on their hair (the outside in approach).

The inside and outside approach to split ends

Here’s what I tell my clients are the three most important things you can do to help damage-proof your hair and improve your hair health, quality, and resilience:

  1. Support healthier hair growth at the root

  2. Protect the hair you already have

  3. Minimize breakage going forward

Here’s what you need to know:

Step 1: Grow Healthier Hair From the Root

Healthy hair starts before it even leaves your scalp. And when your hair grows in stronger, more resilient, and better supported, it’s naturally less prone to splitting later on.

Why Root Health Matters

Your hair is biologically dead once it exits the scalp. That means while you can’t heal hair damage when you already have it, you can help prevent future issues.

Arey The System is designed to support healthier hair growth from the root by focusing on scalp wellness and hair longevity. Scalp health is key to growing great new hair, so Arey haircare only contains clean ingredients and is always kind to your scalp and hair roots. That’s why Arey is preferred by dermatologists more than any other anti-aging haircare brand.

Instead of chasing damage after it happens, The System delivers:

    • Nourishment – for stronger strands

    • Resilience – thicker strands are less vulnerable

    • Support  – specialized care for aging and colored hair

    • Protection – antioxidants combat environmental stressors

When hair grows in stronger, it’s less likely to become fragile and fray at the ends. Think of it like this – you can’t glue together a cracked branch, but, with the right care, you can grow a stronger tree.

Step 2: Break the Hair Damage Cycle

It can be frustrating if you have split ends and are struggling to get the smooth look that you want – your hair may not fall as nicely, and even tangle more easily. If you find yourself turning up the heat on your styling tools or slathering on silicone smoothers, you are in danger of entering the hair damage cycle.

Women using mend

Here’s how a multi-functional product like Arey Mend helps you break the hair damage cycle:

1. Mend Smooths the Cuticle

By coating and conditioning the hair shaft with our unique lightweight formula, it reduces roughness so split fibers lie flatter. And no residue – suitable even for fine hair.

2. Mend Adds Moisture

Hydrated hair is more flexible. Flexibility reduces breakage and prevents existing splits from worsening.

3. Mend Provides Heat Protection

Heat tools are one of the biggest contributors to new split ends. Mend heat protectant creates a barrier that minimizes damage that can cause new split ends.

4. Mend Reduces Friction

Slip matters. When hair tangles less, it breaks less. While Mend doesn’t “heal” a split end, it makes it far less visible – and helps prevent the next one.
