What Is Polygonum Multiflorum?

Polygonum multiflorum is a climbing vine native to China, where its root has been used in traditional medicine for centuries to support hair pigmentation and vitality. In Chinese herbalism it is known as he shou wu. In Western practice, it goes by fo-ti. The name he shou wu translates loosely to “black-haired Mr. He,” a nod to its long association with dark, healthy-looking hair.

The root contains a concentrated profile of bioactive compounds: stilbene glycosides (primarily TSG), emodin, and antioxidant-rich polyphenols. These are the compounds behind its studied effects on the hair follicle and scalp environment.

At Arey, polygonum multiflorum is one of twelve actives inside the Mela-9® Complex, our patented blend developed to target the biology of grey hair at the source.

The Science Behind Polygonum Multiflorum

Grey hair happens when melanocytes, the pigment-producing cells inside hair follicles, slow down or stop making melanin. Polygonum multiflorum has been studied for its ability to interact directly with this process.

Research indicates that TSG, the primary active stilbene glycoside in fo-ti, may stimulate melanocyte proliferation and upregulate tyrosinase activity, the key enzyme in melanin synthesis. Studies have also shown that polygonum multiflorum extract may reduce oxidative stress within the follicle, a known driver of accelerated greying.

Beyond pigmentation, he shou wu has been studied for its effects on scalp microcirculation. Better circulation means more consistent nutrient delivery to the dermal papilla, which supports the overall follicle environment needed for healthy hair growth.

Polygonum Multiflorum Benefits

  • Supports melanocyte activity to help maintain natural hair color
  • Promotes scalp microcirculation for a healthier hair follicle environment
  • Delivers antioxidant protection that may reduce oxidative stress linked to accelerated greying

Why Arey Uses Polygonum Multiflorum

A traditional reputation backed by modern research is exactly the kind of ingredient we build around. Fo-ti has a thousand years of documented use for hair pigmentation, and a growing body of peer-reviewed science exploring why it works at the cellular level. That combination is what earned it a place in the Mela-9® Complex.

We use polygonum multiflorum in To The Root®, our daily scalp serum, Good Night, Grey®, our overnight scalp serum, Wash, our shampoo, and Not Today, Grey™, our daily OTC supplement, because consistent, layered delivery is how results build. Topical application targets the follicle directly. The supplement supports the process systemically. Together, they give fo-ti the best opportunity to do its job.

Polygonum Multiflorum FAQs

What is polygonum multiflorum (fo-ti) used for?

Polygonum multiflorum, also called fo-ti or he shou wu, is used primarily to support hair pigmentation and scalp health. In traditional Chinese medicine, it has been used for centuries to promote dark, healthy-looking hair. Scientifically, it is studied for its ability to stimulate melanocyte activity, support natural melanin production, and deliver antioxidant protection to the follicle environment. It is found in To The Root®, Good Night, Grey®, Wash, and Not Today, Grey™ as part of the Mela-9® Complex.

Is fo-ti good for hair regrowth and grey hair?

Research suggests polygonum multiflorum may support both. Its primary active compound, TSG, has been shown to stimulate melanocyte proliferation and tyrosinase activity, which are central to melanin production and natural hair color. Fo-ti has also been linked to improved scalp microcirculation, which supports the follicle environment needed for healthy hair growth. At Arey, we use it as part of the Mela-9® Complex to target the biology behind grey hair rather than masking it.

Is fo-ti safe to take?

Fo-Ti has a long history of traditional use and is generally well tolerated. Research has identified concern about liver injury which typically involves large amounts of the raw herb, often consumed in doses up to 15,000 mg per day. By contrast, a micro-dose of carefully processed Fo-Ti present in NTG is safer both because of its processing and its low dose. This dose is formulated to deliver subtle supportive benefits of the botanical to the hair follicles while minimizing the risk of adverse reactions. However, if you have specific health concerns, a history of liver disease, or are taking medications, we recommend consulting your healthcare provider before adding Fo-Ti to your routine.

How do I add fo-ti to my haircare routine?

The most direct way to incorporate polygonum multiflorum is through the Mela-9® Complex, which pairs fo-ti with eleven other clinically studied actives across four Arey grey hair products: To The Root®, our daily scalp serum; Good Night, Grey™, our overnight scalp serum; Wash, our shampoo; and Not Today, Grey®, our daily OTC supplement. For best results, use all three consistently to address the biology of grey hair from the inside and out.

How long does fo-ti take to support healthier-looking hair?

Hair follicle cycles are slow by nature, and ingredients that work at the follicle level take time to show results. Most people begin noticing changes in scalp health, hair texture, and early pigmentation support within 8 to 12 weeks of consistent use. Arey recommends using To The Root®, Good Night, Grey®, and Not Today, Grey™ together for a minimum of 90 days to give polygonum multiflorum and the full Mela-9® Complex the time to work.
